The Northern Lights dance high in the sky while the stars sparkle in the night. A glimmer of hope crawls stealthily and carefully aboard the old wreck. As if it were supposed to hold a heart in the dark... a heart that lonely seeks warmth.
Many of us carry the darkness of our inner holds like a rainy day in our hearts. But any dark sky can suddenly be illuminated with hope... with a warm hand to hold.
This photograph was taken a few kilometres from Europe's westernmost point in Iceland's Westfjords. The shipwreck is the country's oldest steel ship. Today, the ship, named Garðar, lies lonely in the dark and abandoned on a deserted beach. The sailors have left it, but its soul lives forever. When Hans and Jobbe visited the ship to photograph it, it was so dark that the stars only just illuminated the night. Once Jobbe had set the camera and was ready to take pictures, the two walked over to the ship. And the second they were ready to be photographed, the sky exploded with northern lights. It only lasted a few minutes, but right there; In that moment, there was more hope aboard in hearts than ever. The light will come if we look for it. And sometimes it takes light and lantern to see it.
